Factory Resetting MacBook
If you want to perform a factory reset on your MacBook to wipe all your data and start fresh, you can follow the steps below:
-
Backup your data: Before proceeding, it’s crucial to create a backup of your important files. You can use Time Machine or manually copy your data to an external storage device.
-
Sign out of iCloud: Open “System Preferences” from the Apple menu, select “Apple ID,” and click on “Overview.” Then, click on “Sign Out” to disconnect your MacBook from your iCloud account.
-
Disable FileVault: If you are using FileVault to encrypt your disk, you should disable it before resetting. Go to “System Preferences,” click on “Security & Privacy,” select the “FileVault” tab, and click on the lock icon to make changes. Then, click on “Turn Off FileVault” and follow the prompted instructions.
-
Restart your MacBook: Click on the Apple menu and choose “Restart.” As your MacBook restarts, press and hold the “Command + R” keys simultaneously until you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe.
-
Enter macOS Recovery mode: Once you’re in macOS Recovery mode, choose “Disk Utility” and click “Continue.” Select your startup disk (usually named “Macintosh HD”), click on “Unmount” (not Erase), and then click on “Erase.” Follow the instructions to erase your disk.
-
Reinstall macOS: After erasing your disk, close the Disk Utility and select “Reinstall macOS” from the macOS Utilities window. Click “Continue” and follow the on-screen instructions to reinstall the operating system. This process may take some time.
-
Restore your data: Once the reinstallation is complete, your MacBook will restart. Follow the setup instructions and choose the option to restore your data from a Time Machine backup or external storage.
Congratulations, you have successfully performed a factory reset on your MacBook, and it is now ready to be set up as new. Make sure to reinstall your applications and customize the settings according to your preference.
