How to Use EXR in Blender
In this tutorial, we will learn how to use the EXR image format in Blender. The EXR format is commonly used in visual effects and animation production due to its high dynamic range and color precision. Blender supports EXR natively, allowing users to take advantage of its advanced features. Let’s get started!
Step 1: Importing an EXR Image
- Launch Blender and open the project you are working on.
- From the main menu, select “File” -> “Import” -> “Image as Plane”.
- In the file browser, navigate to the folder where your EXR image is located. Select the EXR file and click “Import Image as Plane”.
Step 2: Adjusting EXR Image Settings
- With the imported image selected, go to the “Properties” panel.
- In the “Image” tab, locate the “Color Space” setting and select the appropriate color space for your image. Common options include Linear, Non-Color, and Filmic.
- Adjust other image settings as needed, such as Exposure, Gamma Correction, and Color Management.
Step 3: Using EXR for Rendering
- To use the EXR format for rendering, go to the “Render” tab in the “Properties” panel.
- Under the “Output” section, set the “File Format” to “OpenEXR” and choose a location to save the rendered image.

- Start the rendering process by clicking on the “Render” button in the main toolbar.
Step 4: Compositing EXR Images
- After rendering, switch to the “Compositing” workspace.
- Add a “Viewer” node by pressing Shift + A and selecting “Output” -> “Viewer”.
- Connect the output of the render layer to the input of the Viewer node.
- Check the output by enabling the “Backdrop” option in the Viewer node.
- Use additional compositing nodes to adjust and enhance the rendered EXR image as desired.
